After Bone Grafting

Supporting healing & building a strong foundation

Dental implants are designed to be a long-lasting solution, and proper aftercare plays an important role in their success. This recovery period allows the implant to integrate with your bone and surrounding tissue. Following these instructions helps protect your implant, promote healing, and set the foundation for long-term stability and comfort.

01

Immediately After Bone Grafting

First 24 Hours

  • Bite gently on gauze as directed to manage bleeding

  • Rest with your head elevated

  • Apply cold compresses in short intervals to help reduce swelling

  • Take prescribed or recommended medications as directed

  • Avoid touching or disturbing the graft site

Some swelling, mild bleeding, and discomfort are normal following the procedure.

02

Protecting the Graft Site

  • Avoid pulling on your lip or cheek to look at the area

  • Do not probe the site with your tongue or fingers

  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using straws for the first 24 hours

  • Follow all instructions carefully to prevent graft disruption

Protecting the graft during early healing is essential.

03

Eating & Drinking Guidelines

  • Choose soft, cool foods for the first several days

  • Avoid chewing near the graft site

  • Avoid hard, crunchy, hot, or spicy foods

  • Stay hydrated and sip gently

Your care team will advise when it’s safe to return to your normal diet.

04

Oral Hygiene After Bone Grafting

  • Avoid brushing directly over the graft site initially

  • Resume gentle brushing elsewhere as normal

  • After 24 hours, gentle salt water rinses may be recommended

  • Avoid smoking or vaping, as it can interfere with healing and graft success

Maintaining a clean mouth supports healthy healing.

05

Activity & Healing Timeline

  • Avoid strenuous activity for several days

  • Follow activity restrictions provided by your surgeon

  • Bone regeneration is gradual and occurs over time

Healing timelines vary depending on the type and size of the graft.
